Country Range Student Chef challenge

The Country Range Student Chef Challenge is a prestigious culinary competition which has become a much anticipated event in the catering industry’s calendar. The Challenge focuses on core skills and techniques, testing the students' knowledge of both classic and modern cooking methods.

The competition element involves teams of three full-time hospitality and catering students working together to develop a delicious three course meal for four covers, showcasing their understanding of flavours and their skill set.

The team behind the Challenge is committed to working with colleges and lecturers to provide a platform for the next generation of chefs to build and showcase their culinary skills and gain invaluable experience within a well-established competition format.

The Industry Sector

For the industry, having the student chef challenge can raise the profile of the hospitality sector and attract talented new chefs. With the impact of Covid-19, many cafés, restaurants and event venues have struggled to find chefs after months of enforced closures. So it’s more important than ever to educate and to provide opportunities for the future generations of skilled chefs.

The student chef challenge allows you to showcase your own ideas, be recognised by your peers and have the opportunity to develop new skills and experience diverse food styles and presentations. Not only this, but participating offers opportunities to build stronger and more meaningful relationships with suppliers through sponsorship, while networking with other talented chefs. The competition will allow young chefs to compete against some of the world’s finest talent, at the same time gaining a sense of personal pride.

How to Register your interest for the 2021/2022 now

The student chef challenge requires the teams to prepare, cook and present a three-course, four-cover menu within a 90-minute period, utilising core skills and techniques to test the students ability.

The Criteria

The challenge this year is to cook and present two portions of a three-course meal, this will consist of Canapes, Guinea Fowl main course and a tart with a crumble topping for dessert.


Three different types of smoked fish, four servings of each, twelve in total

Guinea Fowl

Two portions from a whole bird, a portion must include Breast and leg meat, each must utilise a different cooking method,


Two portions, an individual tart with a sweet pastry base, filling of your choice and a crumble topping to be presented with a sauce or ice-cream.

The Winning Team

In addition to taking home the much coveted title, the winning team will receive their own Country Range Student Chef Challenge Flint and Flame Professional Chef Knives on the day of the final.

If all that wasn't enough, as part of their prize, they will receive a day’s work experience placement at a Michelin-starred restaurant, as well as a trip to London. A huge opportunity for the lucky winners!

During the trip, they will be taken on a food tour of the city, including new underground food hubs, experiencing some of the best food London has to offer...it doesn't end there, as you’ll share a dining experience with the Challenge and Craft Guild of Chefs team!

The Lecturer of the Winning Team

The additional time and resources that each and every lecturer invests in order to allow teams to enter the Challenge is very much appreciated, and as a result the winning lecturer is awarded with their very own bespoke Chefi Premium Leather Knife Case.

The Runners-up

Each student will receive a Country Range Student Chef Challenge engraved Flint & Flame Professional Chef Knife. All students who reach the final will receive a one year’s membership to the Craft Guild of Chefs and certificates. Each team will also win a feature within the Five Ways to Use feature of the Stir it up Magazine, adding more exposure to you and your work!
